Research Center of the

urban forest mass

-Master's final project-

Madrid Spain

TUTOR: EDUARDO ESCAURIAZA

This project was born from the need to create a center that is in charge of studying and experimenting the forest system of cities. It must work as an agent to attract talents to research the benefits and complexities of urban forest stands. This should also serve as a meeting place for young people who are interested in learning about the importance of keeping the forest mass alive in our cities.

Beyond its general objective of being a research center, this project seeks to solve an urban communication problem within the area. The site is located south of the Jerónimos neighborhood, which borders the Pacífico neighborhood. This is at the height of the Atocha Station and adjoins the Real de Madrid Observatory. However, communication between these two areas is only possible by surrounding our site and accessing the CEDEX (Center for Studies and Experimentation of Public Works) land.

Therefore, this project proposes to be the communication between these two areas, taking from itself an experiential journey or journey through which people can enjoy the building as a research center, but also as a way for mobility.

The shape of the building responds to one of its main design objectives, which was for this building to be a source of communication between Calle de Alfonso XII and CEDEX and El Observatorio Real.

To achieve this, the essential thing was to be able to bridge the existing 22 m drop. Therefore, different ways of doing it are proposed, knowing that the staggering of the terrain was an important factor.

From this the idea is developed, the project is conceived as a building created from the modification of land lines. To do this, a series of platforms or levels are created, with varying heights, that guide the occupant to one of its two exits (one of them towards Alfonso XII and the other towards the CEDEX / Royal Observatory). These platforms follow the alignments of the adjoining buildings and the site. To this idea we add that more than a building where life takes place under the platforms, it is intended that life passes between the planes of the platforms and new planes that are those of the sloping roofs.
